Mexico’s Foreign Ministry urges US migrants to ‘stay calm’

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry announced a plan yesterday to provide more protection and support for Mexican migrants in the United States, urging the population to “stay calm.” The plan comes as a response to promises by American President-elect, Donald J. Trump, to deport as many Mexican immigrants as possible as soon as he gets into office.

Mexico will also attempt to increase efforts to help Mexican civilians receive U.S. documentation status by “increasing consular registrations,” and by speeding up passport and birth certificate deliveries, according to UPI. These plans were detailed in a statement and accompanying video, both titled, “We Are With You.”

The video and statement laid out an 11-point plan to help the Mexican immigrants as much as possible. The Los Angeles Times reported that the measures include a 24-hour hotline that will allow people to report harassment and immigration raids, as well as the expansion of deportation-defense work at 50 consulates.

“Fellow countrymen, these are moments of uncertainty,” Mexico’s foreign minister, Claudia Ruiz Massieu, said in the video, “stay calm, do not fall to provocations and do not let yourself be deceived.” She added: “We want to inform you about possible migratory actions,” that could take effect starting in February.

Ruiz also urged those living in the U.S. to contact Mexican consulates to find out whether they may be targeted for deportation after Trump takes office next year. She pledged to “strengthen dialogue with state and local authorities.”

Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, said in an interview with the CBS program, “60 Minutes” that aired on Sunday that his administration would focus on deporting immigrants with criminal records. He also confirmed that he will be building ‘the wall’ during his time in office.
