Russian President Vladimir Putin called for “a new era of fully fledged relations” between his country and the United States this morning after a surprise victory for Donald Trump in the Presidential Election. According to the Guardian, Russian parliament applauded the news and are now considering possible lifts on US-imposed sanctions.

Putin became one of the first world leaders to congratulate Trump after the news by sending him a telegram expressing hope for an era of positive ties.

“And as I have repeatedly said, it’s not our fault that Russian-American relations are in such a poor state,” President Putin said. “But Russia wants and is ready to restore fully fledged relations with the United States.”

Kirill Dmitriev, chief executive officer of RDIF, Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, noted that the economic and political benefits would be felt throughout his homeland.

In an email to CNBC, Dmitriev said “We believe that election of President Trump will be positive not only for the Russian market but that worldwide markets will restore quickly and will the appreciate pragmatic, growth oriented approach of President Trump.”

Anna Nemtsova, a correspondent for Newsweek based in Moscow, said while Trump was addressing his supporters in New York City, at Union Jack Pub in Moscow, a few Russian men celebrated the beginning of a new life without Hilary Clinton.

According to the BBC, Senior Nationalist MP Vladimir Zhirinovsky threw a party at the parliament building to celebrate Mr Trump’s win, and Former Soviet Mikhail Gorbachev also welcomed his triumph.

Relations between the United States and Russia have become more tense because of prior conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, as well as the allegations of Russian cyber attacks in the US during the presidential campaign.
